From Broadway classics to American songbook gems, this program spans generations of music, delivered with the insight and power that have made her one of the most celebrated performers of our time.
McDonald is the most awarded acting performer in Tony Award history, a record‑breaking six‑time Tony winner with 11 acting nominations, along with two Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award. In 2015, she received the National Medal of Arts, and she has been named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
Her iconic Broadway performances include Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. Television audiences know her from The Gilded Age, The Good Wife, The Good Fight, and Private Practice, while her film work includes Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Respect.
A Juilliard‑trained soprano and acclaimed concert artist, McDonald’s recordings have earned international praise. Her most recent solo album, Sing Happy, was recorded live with the New York Philharmonic.
This special debut promises to be a landmark performance for Birmingham and a highlight of the season—an evening of breathtaking vocals, personal storytelling, and extraordinary theatrical presence.
