ArtPlay's Whimsical Wednesdays Stitches of the Season: Needlework for the Modern Aristocrat

Teaching Artist Rachel Brockwell

Whether destined for a drawing room cushion or a treasured keepsake, needlepoint has long been celebrated as a pastime of refinement and calm. In this introductory workshop, you shall learn two essential stitches and all the practical skills needed to choose a canvas, read a pattern, and begin a project of your own. As needle and thread meet under your capable hand, discover why this timeless craft so enchanted the Regency elite—and why it remains beloved today. A most elegant adventure awaits.

Rachel Brockwell has been a fiber artist for over 15 years and has been pursuing art as a full-time career for over a year. She sells her art under the brand, “ur local hookr,” and frequently teaches many forms of art ranging from crochet and knitting to collaging and paper crafts. She finds sustainability + veganism very important, and in all of her projects, both personal and professional, she prioritizes using recycled & reclaimed materials. Because of this, everything she makes is truly one of a kind. Rachel believes that art should not only be appreciated by all people, but that it should be accessible to all people. By sourcing materials secondhand, she finds that costs plummet along with people’s inhibitions—”you can’t ‘mess up’ something that was already labeled as trash!” So whether we’ve met before or we will be working together for the first time, Rachel can’t wait to create with you.
