Suggested Grades: 6-12 MTA: The Music Shop by UAB Opera Workshop
The UAB Department of Music Opera Workshop presents Richard Wargo’s comic opera The Music Shop, based on a story by Anton Chekhov. Masha is a cheerful shopgirl in Dmitri’s music shop, which contains the largest collection of music in all of Russia. One day, a customer comes in to purchase a copy of a very important song that his wife, a famous opera singer, is supposed to sing for the wedding of the Prince! The complication is that he forgot to write down the name of the tune, so Masha and Dmitri must sing nearly every piece of music in the shop to help him remember. Filled with popular tunes from classical and folk music, this 45-minute piece is an action-filled comic introduction to the world of opera.
