Audrey Atkins
Born in the Oil Capital of Alabama, Citronelle, Audrey Atkins made her way to Birmingham by way of the University of Montevallo, where she earned a B.A. in English. During the day, she is the Director of Community Engagement at WBHM 90.3, Public Radio for the Heart of Alabama. But as a raconteur at heart, she has always loved telling stories and in 2018 published They Call Me Orange Juice, a collection of essays about growing up and living in the South. For nearly 20 years, she has been a freelance writer and has had her stories and articles published in magazines such as Birmingham Magazine and Mobile Bay Monthly, online through Alabama Media Group’s popular It’s a Southern Thing, and as part of The Bitter Southerner’s Folklore Project. And for almost a decade. Audrey has shared her thoughts on everything from Southern sayings to gumbo to foundation garments at her blog Folkways Nowadays.
